A word about what to do with some of your time not spent in classes: get involved in extracurricular activities (studying does not count as an extracurricular activity).  It doesn’t matter which ones, only that you find something that you enjoy.  Not only will your education be enhanced by participating in extracurricular activities, you will be more interesting (and therefore more marketable) than your counterpart who does nothing other than study.  In addition, extracurriculars provide an excellent opportunity to make and develop friendships.

One example of an extracurricular activity all 1Ls will have an opportunity to participate in is the Duke Law Softball League. Each 1L section will comprise a softball team, which will compete throughout the fall semester against the other 1L sections, as well as 2L and 3L teams. Do not worry, no prior softball experience required!
